Course programme

Level 7 Module - 15 credits

Module Code: 7FHH1111

Optional Module - MSc Respiratory Practice

Module Aim:

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a critical understanding of aspects of assessment, triage, treatment and management of patients experiencing acute episodes of their illness particularly within the community.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

Successful students will typically be able to:

1. Apply detailed knowledge relating to the disease process and treatment options to the triage and management of patients experiencing an exacerbation within the community.

2. Explore the multi-professional organisation and delivery of individualised care and critically evaluate the influence this has upon triage and management decisions.

Skills and attributes:

Successful students will typically be able to:

1. Critically evaluate contemporary research and literature relating to the management of patients experiencing acute episodes and exacerbations within the community and discuss this within the context of their own practice.

2. Apply the skills of critical reflection to develop a reasoned intellectual argument for enhancing/augmenting management of acute episodes within the community through the development of a multi-professional protocol.

Module content:

During this module students will build upon their own experience exploring how acute respiratory episodes can be managed safely in the community. Accepting that students at this level will have advanced knowledge and skills in the performance of triage and the subsequent management of acute-on-chronic episodes, this module explores acute management from a broader view exploring how the psychosocial, political, financial and multi-professional perspectives can be used to bring about local adaptation and best practice.

The module will utilise lectures, group and paired work to explore issues from a multi-professional perspective. A series of clinical scenarios based on complex patient presentations will be used to highlight the complexities involved. These sessions will engage the student in debate and discussion, considering service issues thus enabling students to reflect upon existing provision and apply problem solving skills to develop new knowledge in this area of respiratory care.

Module Assessment:

1,500 word Critical Reflection

1,500 word (or equivalent) Protocol/Guidelines

Coursework :

Critical Reflection: 100% Weighting: 50%

Protocol: 100% Weighting: 50%

Within the 1,500 word critical reflection, the student will be expected to reflect upon current practice within their locality identifying issues which are impacting upon the management of an acutely ill patient within the community. The student may select a particular patient experience to utilise as an exemplar or take a more general view focusing upon how local and national politics, finance and social variance are governing practice. The student will compare and contrast this to evidence of best practice found within the literature.

1,500 (or equivalent) Protocol/Guidelines

Using the critical reflection as a focus, the student will be required to develop a protocol relating to the above. The protocol / guidelines may consider acute management from a broad perspective or take on specific areas, e.g. communication across a multi-professional team relating to referral to bring about an improvement in service.

Attendance requirements:

There are two study days timetabled into this 15 week module.

The module is run on a flexible learning basis supported by comprehensive course materials (including course packs and e-learning modes). Two structured study days will facilitate classroom-based workshops, lectures and discussions. In addition, student participation, interaction and peer support will be facilitated through the use of an electronic platform.

These approaches will enable students to reflect upon existing knowledge and skills, evaluate evidence, develop problem solving skills and thus develop personal knowledge in this area of respiratory care.

Additional information

This module can be studied on a stand alone basis or part of a MSc Respiratory Practice Pathway.
This is the only dedicated MSc Respiratory programme in the UK.
