This course enables delegates to identify, assess and carry out manual handling situations safely, with awareness of their responsibilities under Health and Safety and Manual Handling Operation Regulations.

Program
Course objectives/key benefits:
On completion, delegates will be able to:
· Identify how age, fatigue and general health can affect the individual's chances of a manual handling related accident at work
· Understand how poor lifting techniques affect the lower back
· Identify correct ergonomic principles at work
· Identify how to avoid risks
· Practice basic movements and techniques used to lift and test load
· Assess lifting, who or what machinery should be used to carry out the lift
· Understand the importance of correct technique in 'sit to stand'
· Understand their responsibilities under the Health and Safety Regulations
Who the course is aimed at:
Hospital staff, Nurses, porters and carer of the elderly employed in hospitals, nursing or residential care homes. This course is also suitable for any employee whose work involves manual handling of people, or managers who need to know what their responsibilities are under the regulations.
Course content:
· An outline of the regulations
· The causes of strain, fatigue and injury along with safe and efficient handling technique in practice
· A practical demonstration
· How age, fatigue and general health can affect a person's ability to mobilise independently
· Look at unsafe practice

· Seminar including practical and group work
· Delegate assessment: observation of lifting techniques and a short multiple-choice paper.
