Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA)
Our welding training focuses on developing practical welding capability such
that trainees achieve a consistent standard. The courses provide an
intense but comprehensive course of welding instruction for those with
some or minimal welding experience. They are designed to promote
practical welding proficiency and provide trainees with a sound
theoretical understanding of the process.
Our welding bay is
fully ventilated with local and area extraction. On completion of the
course trainees will be expected to be able to produce finished welded
joints to an acceptable standard. Candidates can also be tested to the
Welder Approval Standard BS4872 if required. This is an accepted and
widely used standard ideally suited to maintainers and welders alike.
Practical Work:
-
Safe setting up of arc welding machine including electrical settings
and polarity
-
Striking of arc and deposition of weld material in FLAT,
HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL, VERTICAL, and OVERHEAD position.
-
Making simple joints in these positions as appropriate:
-
"T" Fillet, Open Vee Butt, Close Square Butt, Lap weld
-
With and without edge preparations as appropriate
-
Using RUTILE, IRON POWDER and LOW HYDROGEN electrodes
-
Using low carbon steel manufactured to EN43A of varying thickness (6mm
- 8mm - 10mm - 12mm)
-
Recognising Simple weld faults
-
Testing completed weld joints
Theoretical Work:
-
Instruction in the safe and correct use of the MMA equipment
-
Identifying and selecting the correct type of welding rods for the
process
-
Understanding the requirements of current setting, rate of travel and
arc length
