Course programme

The combination of glamour, philosophy, popular culture, semiology, gender and identity and a profound understanding of fashion are essential elements in creating an image with impact, in this exciting area of work. The strength of a message from any brand campaign, publicity or fashion editorial is literally in the hands of the Fashion Photographer. This has been developed as an art form by many of the leading professional cult figures in the fashion photography industry.

Who is the Fashion Photographer
Fashion Photographers work both in studios and on location to produce imaginative and eye-catching photographs that illustrate, advertise clothes/accessories and lifestyle with a fashion directed narrative. They need to understand each client's brand image, the various final uses of images, and be able to work closely with other creative people to fulfill the brief.
They must be innovative and artistic with an intense interest in - and knowledge of - fashion trends, as well as the history of fashion, art and fashion photography. They must also be able to cultivate and maintain top-level contacts within the fashion industry and the fashion publishing business.
A Fashion Photographer produced by this programme will have a sound knowledge and understanding, through personal exploration, of this creative subject and its influences from cinema, fine art, psychology and semiology. The emphasis is placed not only upon the photograph itself and the fashion subject but also with the thought processes that came to form it, together with individualism of the photographer themselves in their approach to picture making.

Through photographic practice the contemporary photographer examines social, cultural and critical issues involved in the practice of fashion photography and style and the impact and construction of the fashion image as a spectacle.

The programme explores the rhetoric of fashion photographic production and contextualises theory and practice within popular culture and mass media. In broad terms, it is a multidisciplinary framework of learning leading to an original body of photographic work proposed and negotiated by the student in a selected area of the fashion industry. This in turn encourages a personal mode of working that will inform a final body of work while collaborating as a team with stylists and other experts. Our students will benefit from our location in the european capitals of fashion and will gain priceless experience from exciting locations to studio professional practice.
