The Master of Applied Science (MappSc) at the Faculty of Health Sciences provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake in-depth study in a specialised area, while enjoying an independent style of learning and freedom of expression in academic enquiry. On completion of the master’s degree, students may apply to continue on to obtain a PhD.

Studying for a MAppSc is a unique opportunity for students to advance their knowledge, develop and prove their ability, and expand their career prospects.

The MAppSc appeals to people for a variety of reasons. Candidates may want to:

- investigate ideas and areas that are currently unknown

- extend on an interest in research fostered through previous study

- demonstrate capacity for applying sustained effort and intellectual rigor to a complex issue

- develop clinical-based evidence to inform their practice

- differentiate themselves and receive professional parity with clinical peers

- learn from research leaders in their field

- career advancement - a MAppSc can assist career progression, particularly in industrial research, government, and developmental organisations.

Graduates of the MAppSc have the opportunity to pursue diverse career options, and it may surprise potential candidates that only 10% of people with research degrees in health sciences go on to work in academia.

Please note if you wish to pursue your candidature off-campus (within or outside Australia), you must complete an equivalent of at least two semesters of candidature for PhD, and one semester for a master’s by research within the University prior to submitting your thesis for examination. This period may be taken at any time during the candidature either continuously or in non-consecutive periods.

Your research at Sydney

Research at The University of Sydney is dynamic and always evolving; inspiring the active mind and providing new tools and ways of thinking that lead to innovation. A postgraduate research degree is a training exercise in which the candidate acquires knowledge of research methods and experience in planning, performing and publishing research under the guidance of a supervisor. The success of that training is assessed through a thesis, which in the case of a PhD is expected to provide some evidence of originality and thereby make some significant contribution to knowledge, at least some of which is publishable. A successful research master’s thesis will likewise demonstrate a grasp of training in research methodology but may make a less original contribution than a doctoral thesis. Over the years, The University of Sydney has consistently outperformed other Australian universities in the measure of research performance used by the Australian Government to allocate funding. The numbers are impressive, but what really matters is the research this funding supports. This exceptional outcome is testament to the breadth, depth and scale of Sydney’s research enterprise and demonstrates the superior quality of Sydney researchers in the eyes of their research peers.

Supervision

The supervisor is that member of the academic or, as appropriate, senior research staff, appointed to take primary responsibility for the conduct of a student's research candidature. The supervisor must be available at all stages of the candidature for advice, assistance and direction and is responsible for the progress of the candidature to the head of department/school and the faculty or college. The Faculty provides quality supervision by well trained supervisors, many of whom are leaders in their field internationally. We also provide practical and logistical support such as a full time computer and an open plan or office space to work in, full time Professional Service Officers are available for practical research assistance, Research Advice Team offer invaluable advice on research issues and the Faculty funds many PhD and master's by research candidates to attend local and international conferences.

Scholarships

The University of Sydney offers a number of research scholarships to outstanding domestic and international students. Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and citizens of New Zealand are domestic applicants.

Domestic students:
Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) / University of Sydney Postgraduate Award (UPA) scholarships are University-wide research scholarships for local students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research at an Australian university. The scholarships are provided to assist with general living costs. For more information visit: http://sydney.edu.au/scholarships/research/

International students:
Scholarships available to international research students are administered by the International Office and include the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS). Faculty funding for research students:
The Faculty may make available up to $750 per year of Direct Research Costs (DRC) support to research students, upon written application by the student with support of the student's primary supervisor, and with Faculty approval.

Research related travel:
Research students may apply for travel support to attend national or international scientific conferences, if they are presenting an oral communication or poster presentation, through the Postgraduate Research Support Scheme (PRSS), Grants-in-aid are also available to domestic students to provide students with travel grants to support short-term periods of research overseas.
