The Master of Fine Arts (Research) provides you, as an artist or professional in related areas, with the opportunity to develop your creative practice into a postgraduate research degree. It provides the framework for you to develop new creative knowledge and skills through working on a research project based around creative practice in your chosen field.
The Master of Fine Arts allows you to complete a creative work or industry-embedded project (e.g. exhibition, industry report) with an additional written component that explores the contribution your creative work makes to the field or the investigation of ideas implicit in the creative work.
This course will provide you with advanced knowledge of research methods that can be applied to creative practice in your specialist area. You will master relevant techniques and skills associated with your disciplinary practice at a professional level level; and develop skills in investigation and critical thinking, and gain extensive knowledge in your area.

A completed recognised bachelor honours degree including a major relevant to the intended area of study; or

A completed recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent) including a major relevant to the intended area of study with a minimum grade point average (GPA) score of 5.0 (on QUT’s 7 point scale) and relevant professional and/ or research experience as determined by Faculty.

Units Download course structures and unit outlines for Master of Fine Arts (Research) This course is a three semester or 18 month program (full-time equivalent), usually comprising of a 12 credit points of core coursework unit and up to 24 credit points of optional electives, with the remainder of the program culminating in submission of a research thesis. Research component The research component will be undertaken as a creative practice-based project with a written component of 7000-10 000 words. Creative practice-led projects may include: a significant creative work such as a live performance or music composition a work of fiction or non-fiction a script or production for film, television or live performance a multimedia script or production projects commissioned by industry, government and community organisations workplace-related projects.
