This innovative degree has been designed by critical care clinicians for doctors interested in emergency medicine, anaesthetists and intensive care medicine. It is offered for the first time in Australasia.



Coursework will include the basic sciences, retrieval medicine and pain medicine and communication, consent and ethics relevant to the practice of critical care. You will gain insights and understanding into the key research that informs this area of practice.



This degree has been designed to help you become a well-rounded, analytical and successful clinician. The basic science units can assist you in passing the entry examinations of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, (ACEM), Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). It will help you fulfil the research requirements of these colleges, and provide research opportunities.



The course will connect you with clinical and academic leaders in the field, and allow you to stand out in a competitive profession. It is offered part-time and delivered online with intensive face-to-face components, ideal for working doctors.

Course programme

The Master requires the successful completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:

  • 12 credit points of compulsory units of study;
  • 24 credit points of stream-specific core units of study; and
  • 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The course can be studied full-time or part-time and is delivered online with intensive face-to-face components.

Graduate opportunities

The course provides advanced postgraduate training for students who intend to pursue a career in emergency medicine, anaesthetics or intensive care medicine.

Course accreditation

Some units can assist you in passing the entry examinations of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, (ACEM), Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).

Information about the Master Medicine ( Critical Care) received from the Australasian College For Emergency Medicine (ACEM), Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM):

ACEM:

CEPI5100 Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney has been approved for the purpose of fulfilling the Trainee Research Requirement.

CRIT5008:Evidence and Ethics in Practice at the University of Sydney is currently under consideration for approval for the purpose of fulfilling the Trainee Research Requirement.

(Note from Course coordinator: PUBH5018 Introductory Biostatistics is approved by ACEM for the purpose of fulfilling the Trainee Research Requirement. This subject can be undertaken as a general elective for the completion of the Graduate Diploma or Master Medicine (Critical Care).

ANZCA:
The Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Critical Care) and the Master of Medicine (Critical Care) would satisfy the requirements for Scholar Role B provided that the core unit, CEPI5100 Introductory Clinical Epidemiology and the capstone unit, code CRIT5008 Evidence and Ethics in Practice have been completed. Pre-approval must be sought but will be granted automatically for this course.

Successful completion of the Advanced Master Medicine (Critical Care) option would also satisfy the requirements, provided that the work produced was accepted for publication.

CICM:
The Advanced option of the Master Medicine (Critical Care) may be undertaken to fulfil the requirements of the Formal Project.

Further study

Graduates may be eligible to enrol in the Master Advanced course.
Outstanding graduates may be eligible to pursue a higher degree by research in the courses of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Surgery (by research) offered by Sydney Medical School.
