The Master of Music Studies (Conducting) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is a four-semester postgraduate coursework degree for the training of conductors to a level that allows them to seek professional placement with music ensembles. The degree program combines detailed study of conducting techniques, in-house experience of working with ensembles and conductors, and supporting academic units of study to produce comprehensively prepared conductors. The program of study culminates in the 4th semester examined performance, a concert of 30 to 45 minutes to be conducted by the candidate.

Study plan

Candidates of the Master of Music Studies (Conducting) will complete a set curriculum comprising three units of study per semester, including one 12 credit point unit of study in conducting in each semester. You will also take three units of study in Ensemble Experience, which will involve working closely with a conductor to become familiar with the day to day work of conducting.


Progression rules

Under normal progression, a student shall undertake all units of study to the value of 24 credit points per semester as prescribed for the course. Students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and performance-related activities prescribed for their units of study.

Capstone experience

The Individual Project units of study provide students with the opportunity to undertake a research project. Projects can be analytical, historical, notional, kinesthetic, repetoire based or stylistic, and can take a number of different forms; written document, CD or DVD recordings or performing edition of work(s).
