The Public Health programs at Sydney Medical School focus on the prevention of illness and the promotion of health. Learning opportunities are aimed at developing the essential knowledge and required skills of practitioners in the practice of public health, including the effective management of community health problems to improve conditions and outcomes. The programs are offered at a graduate diploma and master’s degree level with an emphasis on a modern approach to improving health outcomes within disadvantaged and developing communities.



With a large number of units of study to choose from, you can tailor the program to suit your individual needs. You may choose to take a variety of subjects or study subjects within one of five pathways:



- Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Communicable Disease)

- Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Injury)

- Public Health Research

- Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Chronic Disease)

- Health Economics/Health Policy.



Pathways are highly flexible and students may choose units of study according to their interest, subject to study load and prerequisites.

Study plan

The Master of Public Health consists of 48 credit points (cp), including 32cp of core units, and 16cp of elective units. The majority of core units of study are scheduled in Semester 1.
The core units provide basic health knowledge and skills in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, Qualitative Health Research, Health Promotion and Public Health Ethics. Most electives are in semester two of each year.
You will undertake a minimum of 8cp of PUBH electives and a maximum of 8cp of non PUBH elective units. Many units of study are also available in distance mode.
