Course programme

Students will learn through set practical projects and workshops the art and craft of millinery. Each term will focus on a new skill or technique, building to a 5 hat collection; alongside their hats students will come away with a folder of couture techniques and develop their understanding of the importance of millinery historically and in the fashion industry now, through guided research which will start to feed into their own design work.

Term 1 - Felt hats and Millinery Design

Exploring felt hats, blocking techniques and starting to look at millinery design with an introduction to the history of hat making, you will begin to develop your own visual language of millinery design. Putting your designs into practice there will be a workshop on block making during this term. Students should aim to complete 2 felt hats, and make 1 block of their own design by the end of term 1.

Term 2 - Straws, Sinemay and Finishing Techniques

Extending your blocking skills you will explore and work with the more traditional summer weight fabric of straws in term 2. You will also look at cocktail hats and fascinators, and the appropriate materials selection for your hats. To compliment your design work this term, there will be an exhibition/show visit, and couture workshops in feather trim techniques and flower making. Students aim to complete a blocked Straw hat and fascinator at the end of this term, along with a showcase of handmade flowers or feathers to dress their hats.

Term 3 - Pattern hats, Collections and Business Master Class

The final term sees you completing your 5-hat collection with a pattern hat. Working with patterns students will learn how to cut, sew and finish a hat from a selection of hat patterns provided by the tutor. To complete the 30 weeks learning there will be a 1-day master class on starting your own millinery business, where students can present their collections and related design work, to a milliner working in industry to gain valuable feedback and advice.
