Course programme
This comprehensive sewing course will give you a thorough understanding of sewing and garment construction methods, used in the industry today. Through a combination of discussions, practical group exercises and one-to-one consultations, you will explore different construction methods, working with different types of fabric and the laying and cutting of commercial multi-sized patterns.
You will make 10 complete garments, and through this you will learn a range of sewing techniques. You will also learn about different methods of inserting components such as invisible and lapped zips, different types of collars, cuffs and pockets, working with woven and stretch fabrics such as jersey, and finishing garments professionally.
The course includes:
- Looking at different needles and threads suitable for fabric types
- Standard stitches using lockstitch and overlocking machines
- Seaming curved edges
- Straight edges & gathered edges together
- Various seam types including: French seams & flat fell seams
- Simple buttonholes
- Topstitching
- Bias Binding
- Collars and Cuffs
- Pocket types
- Facings and interlinings
- Trimming work & pressing
- Cutting and assembling a classic lined dress, a blouse, a shirt and trousers
- Skirt vents, splits and pleats
- Cutting & assembling jersey t-shirt and leggings
Level:
Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
Dates: (Saturdays, delivered in three parts)
Part 1: September 23rd – December 9th (12 weeks) ·
Part 2: January 6th – March 24th (12 weeks) ·
Part 3: April 14th – May 26th (12 weeks)
Please note:
Due to the length of this course International Students who hold a passport from a country that is outside the EEA or Switzerland must already have immigration permission to stay in the UK which covers the full length of the course and has no restrictions on studying.
