Mathematics (Adults)

Who is the course for?
This course is intended for anyone wishing to gain a GCSE in Mathematics, at Grade `C` or above.

What is the course about?
You will study topics such as Number (Arithmetic), Algebra, Shape and Space (Geometry) and Data Handling (Statistics).

Will I need anything else?
You will need a scientific calculator (your tutor will advise you on a suitable model in the first few weeks).

How long & often do I attend?
The course lasts for the full academic year, from September until the examinations in June. The class is for three hours a week.

How will I be assessed?
The course follows the GCSE offered by EdExcel, and covers the National Curriculum at Key Stage 4.

The course is assessed mainly by external examination. You will sit two examinations at the end of the course, one where calculators are not allowed, and another where you may use your calculator. (50 % each of final grade)

The course is set at the `Foundation` level, where the best grade available is at grade `C`. If you would like to study for the `Higher` level, which will allow you to gain an `A*` grade, you may, but the extra work required will have to be covered in your own time (your tutor will give you guidance on this).

What opportunities will this lead to?
Having a `C` grade in mathematics is a necessity for many jobs, including teaching, nursing, research, engineering and business. Also, many higher education and university courses require it as an entry qualification.
