Mathematics - A and AS Levels

What are the main features of this course?
The first year is the AS level course and allows students to study Pure Mathematics and Statistics. Students who wish to achieve an A level then take the second year of the course, which builds on the Pure element covered in the first year and introduces an applied module in Mechanics. Pure Mathematics is an extension of GCSE topics. It includes further study of algebra, geometry and trigonometry together with other topics such as calculus and vectors. In Statistics, probability, regression and correlation, sampling and distributions are studied. Mechanics includes the study of forces, equations of motion and centres of mass. Further mathematics is offered to both first and second year students who would like to develop their mathematics.
The use of information technology is integral to the course. There is no coursework element to this course. All students will be issued with textbooks. Students are regularly assessed using examination standard questions and past examination papers. Students require a scientific calculator. You will be able to purchase one from the department at the start of the course at a very reasonable price.

How is the course assessed?
The course is modular with three modules examined in both the first year and the second year for those taking Mathematics. Students wishing to take A level Further Mathematics will take an extra three modules in the first year and three more modules in the second year. It is also possible to take an A level in Mathematics and an AS level in Further Mathematics by taking nine modules over the two years.

Who should study this course?
Students are preferred to have at least grade B in GCSE Mathematics; equivalent qualifications will be considered especially from mature and overseas students. Some students will be required to attend support classes. Students who gain a grade C at Foundation level would not be expected to take an AS Mathematics course and would be advised to consider AS Statistics instead. Students wishing to study Further Mathematics need at least a Grade A at Higher Level. Students may be admitted onto the second year of the course as long as they have satisfactory evidence of completion of the first year on an A level course.

Mathematics is an A level which is extremely useful in many fields. It is essential, not only for the study of Mathematics and Pure Sciences, but also for all forms of engineering. It is a qualification for medicine. It can also lead to courses in Economics, Business Studies, Law, Computing etc. It is a highly respected qualification for those wishing to enter employment.
