About the course

Group sizes are not large with an average of about 20 students per class. The department is relatively small so you will receive excellent support and attention from teaching staff.

During your studies you are not required to specialise in any particular aspect or application of mathematics and this ensures you have the opportunity to learn a broad range of mathematical topics.

You may study mathematics as a single honours or as a combined degree with one other subject.

Additional topics included on the course, which you will study mainly during your final year, were chosen by teaching staff because they felt they were intriguing and fascinating subjects that would complement your core studies.

What you will learn

The degree contains a broad mix of mathematics with a spread of topics similar to those found on A-level courses but, naturally, to a greater depth and with a greater degree of specialization.

The core of the degree is pure mathematics which forms the basis of your studies. You will also enhance your understanding and skills in applied mathematics, statistics and computational mathematics.

As well as expanding your knowledge and understanding of mathematics you will develop your skills of abstract, logical thinking and reasoned argument.

What you will study

The mathematical methods courses contain mostly calculus and include some revision work in the very early part of the degree.

The pure mathematics in the degree is generally more abstract in nature than that which you will have encountered at A-level.

In addition to the mathematical methods modules there are eight pure mathematics modules, four of which are in the first two levels: Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Real Analysis and Linear Mathematics. The remaining four, which are in the third level, are: Complex Analysis, Rings and Numbers, Topology and Group Theory.

There are four modules related to classical applied mathematics: Vector Analysis and Dynamics in the second level and Fluid Dynamics and Differential Equations in the third level.

There is an introduction to statistics in the methods course in the first level, which is based on the assumption that you have not studied the topic before. There are two statistics modules in the second level and a probability module in the third level.

It is essential that you have a good grounding in pure mathematics before starting on the degree. A background in applied mathematics and statistics is less important.

We encourage our Level 3 students to take part in the Student Associates Scheme. This paid work experience placement allows you to gain classroom experience in a school and decide if you are interested in teaching. It's particularly valuable if you are thinking of studying towards a PGCE after you graduate and will strengthen your application.

Special features

  • The department is relatively small and friendly and offers enthusiastic teaching and support throughout the course of your studies.
  • You may choose the Student Associates Scheme as one of your Level 3 options. The scheme provides teaching experience which is recognised by the Training and Development Agency for Schools.

Careers and professional development

It is highly likely that you have decided to study mathematics at degree level because you enjoy the subject and also because it is a degree which employers hold in high regard. The vocational aspects of the subject are also important, particularly if you are considering teaching when you graduate.

The BSc (Hons) in Mathematics is designed to satisfy both your intellectual and career aspirations and you will receive the support and encouragement you need to help you complete the course with a good result.
