PhD projects are available in Applied and Pure Mathematics, and Statistics. The broad areas of research in Applied Mathematics include fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, biomechanics and biomedical engineering, and are motivated by industrial and medical applications. Research in Pure Mathematics includes number theory, non-commutative ring theory and mathematical logic. Research in Statistics is primarily in Medical Statistics. For further information see the Centre for Mathematics Research website.

Course programme
Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics. We carry out research in aeroengine and submarine noise, waves and instabilities in boundary layers on aircraft wings, thin film flows and associated fingering instabilities, giant waves and tsunamis and applications of fluid dynamics to geophysics, especially the atmosphere and oceans. For further information, see the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics page.
Solid Dynamics and Elasticity. We carry out research in elastic waves and vibrations in waveguides, the mathematical theory of nonlinear elasticity, structural vibrations induced by fluid flow, the mathematics of thin elastic layers, ground vibrations produced by high-speed trains and waves in multi-layered elastic media. For further information, see the Theoretical Solid Mechanics page.
Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering. We carry out research in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering applications, aneurysm rupture in arteries, physiological flow in the lungs and fluid flow dynamics in mechanical thrombectomy devices. For further information, see the Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering page.
Pure Mathematics. We carry out research in number theory, non-commutative ring theory and in mathematical logic. Number theory research includes algebraic number theory and graph theory.
Medical Statistics. Research in this area is focussed on clinical trials and epidemiology.
