Mathematics / Further Mathematics
The emphasis of the course is on using and applying Mathematics, and taking responsibility for their own learning. The AS specification has been selected to develop abilities to reason logically, and to understand the relationship between'real world' problems and mathematical models. The A2 specification extends students' range of mathematical skills and techniques and uses them in more difficult unstructured problems. Students will develop an awareness of the relevance of Mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general.
AS Units (Year One)
The course is divided into two separate modules:
Statistics 1: Includes:Discrete random varibles, Probability, Binomial Distribution, Poisson Distribution, Continuous random Varibles.
33.3% of the total. 1.5 hour written paper in May
Core AS (split into 2 papers Core1 and Core2)Includes: Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Differentiation, Integration, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms.
66.7% of total
A2 Units (Year Two)
This contains two modules:
Mechanics 1: 1.5 hour paper 33.3% of year 2 total (exam sat in June)
Core 3: 33.3% of year 2 total (exam sat in January)
Core 4: 33.3% of year 2 total (exam sat in June)Mathematics provides a useful route into many careers. The ability to think logically and be able to solve problems are highly valued skills in the work place. Mathematics is now a requirement for a number of university courses and is also an advantage for many subjects including:
- Actuarial work and insurance.
- Economics and business.
- Management, finance, accountancy.
- Computer Science and ICT.
- Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, genetic
- Engineering and physics.
- Social sciences
- Law
Please note:
Some students may take Double Mathematics where they complete the whole of A Level Maths in the first year, having twice the usual amount of lessons.
AS/A2 Further Mathematics is then taken in your second year provided you have achieved a C grade at A Level Mathematics. It contains six modules (Three of which are taken in January and three in June). All modules are all equally weighted and chosen from the following areas:
- Further Pure Maths
- Mechanics
- Decision
- Statistics
Any student who is planning to take a Mathematics related degree (Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc., as well as Mathematics itself) will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics, at least to AS level. Further Mathematics qualifications are prestigious and are strongly welcomed by universities.
