About this course

GCSE Grade D in Maths would be an acceptable start point, proof of grade is asked at enrolment. We may accept those with no formal qualifications if you can demonstrate good numeracy skills.

Mathematics GCSE Level 2

About the course:
This is one year course. It may accompany another full time course. For example, learners frequently study the course alongside a BTEC National Diploma (Level 3 qualification.) GCSE Maths is a pre-requisite for many BTEC National Diplomas. The programme starts in the second week of September. The validating body is AQA. The specification followed: AQA Modular B Specification: 4302/7.

Course Content:
It is a two tier course: Higher and Foundation levels. There is no coursework. There are three modules. For each module there are two papers, the first of which candidates may not use a calculator, the second of which candidates do have access to a calculator. Module 1: data handling, graphs. Module 3: number. Module 5: algebra, trigonometry and geometry.

Learning Style:
Mainly visual and auditory with some kinaesthetic/tactile learning.

Equipment Requirements:
Learners are expected supply their own stationery. However course materials such as worksheets are provided. Recommended texts for example Nelson Thornes: AQA Mathematics for specification 4302/7 are available in the college's Central Learning Centre. Students are encouraged to purchase their own copies or access the text online.

Assessment:
Through the academic year there are three sets of examinations. The first in November, the second in March and the third and the end of May, beginning of June. Within each set of exams. there are two papers. Ultimately the overall grade awarded is accumulative.

Progression:
Learners may progress to Advanced Level Maths, a Free Standing Maths Qualification at level 3 or Key Skills, Application of Number at level 3.


Enrolment Instructions:
An interview will be required by the Maths team, before enrolment onto this course. You will need to obtain a 60% achievement from a college specific timed test. This is arranged by and carried out within the interview.
Late enrolments are open until two weeks after the start date - the second week of September.
