Mathematics, AS-Level
AS & A Level
About the Course
This A level course consists of six modules (four pure and two applications) with the AS qualification based upon the first three. A choice of applications is available (see below) and you must choose two options from the three (or a single option for AS only). The courses will encourage individual study skills and develop your confidence in using mathematics to solve problems. Advantage will be taken of new technology whenever appropriate â€" in particular you will become confident in the use of graphical calculators. You will model real problems and great emphasis is placed on interpreting results. You will study modules of Pure Mathematics. This includes the development of some topics you have met before, like functions and trigonometry, and the introduction of new ideas such as differentiation and integration. You then have a choice of Applications modules Mechanics
You will investigate:
• Motion and what is gravity?
• Momentum and what would it take to stop the Queen Mary 2?
• Forces and what are the g-forces on the Oblivion ride at Alton Towers?
• Circular motion and energy.
A practical approach will be taken wherever possible to investigate and develop the mathematics involved.
Statistics
You will look at data and learn what makes a good sample. Various techniques will be introduced that will allow you to use the data you collect to model real-life situations. These models can then be used to predict future events and trends, from election results to the demand for new hospitals. What about modelling queues at Alton Towers - is Nemesis more popular than Congo Rapids?
Decision Mathematics
This is a popular option, which examines the ways mathematics can be applied to a wide range of industrial and commercial problems of considerable economic importance. For example: How would you link the cities of Britain by a fibre-optic cable network?
Course Aims
The course aims to provide a mathematics course that, while challenging, is accessible and enjoyable. You will discover mathematics as a living subject, to be investigated and developed.
