Course programme

Students are qualified to teach secondary mathematics within 3 years (rather than the 4 years taken if you study for a first degree in mathematics and then qualify to teach in the fourth year. If you have a love of mathematics and a passion for teaching and working with young people, this course combines the two, developing your teaching skills alongside your mathematical studies. The course enables you to gain an honours degree and to qualify to teach secondary mathematics 11-18 years (Key Stages 3, 4 and 5) within three years. This course draws from the expertise of two Universities: the University of Kent for your mathematics studies and Canterbury Christ Church University for your mathematics education and teaching modules. You therefore benefit by studying at two Universities within close proximity of each other in Canterbury and by having access to both Universities’ facilities throughout your studies. Canterbury Christ Church University will recommend to the Department for Education and the National College for Teaching and Leadership that successful students be awarded Qualified Teacher Status. Year one is based at University of Kent where you study alongside other mathematics undergraduate students and therefore a place in halls of residence can be sought there. Year two is again mainly based at University of Kent with some time at Canterbury Christ Church University and Year three is based at Canterbury Christ Church University studying alongside other secondary mathematics student teachers. 93% overall student satisfaction for School of Mathematics courses at University of Kent (NSS, 2015)
