About this course

You should already have GCSE Maths, grade B, higher tier, plus 4 other GCSEs in academic subjects, all at Grade C or above. You will have to sit a diagnostic assessment to see whether this level of study is suitable for you. Mature students may not need the same academic qualifications but will still have to take the diagnostic assessment.

Course Content:
For AS Level Mathematics, you will study 2 Core modules plus 1 other, in either Statistics or Decision Mathematics. Core Mathematics, 67% of the whole qualification, to include the following. Algebra; coordinate geometry; trigonometry; differentiation and integration. Decision mathematics: This module will develop your skills in logic and teach you the use of algorithms in problem solving. Statistics: Techniques of data analysis and knowledge of the behaviour of data distributions will be extended in this unit. At A2, you will complete a further 2 Core modules and again 1 other in either Statistics or Decision Mathematics.

Other Information:
Assessment for this course is by 3 written examinations taken at the end of the year. You will also have regular assignments, tests and a mock examination. If you are 16-19 years of age, you will also be on a Curriculum 2000 programme studying Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and IT, plus enrichment sessions. You will need to achieve good grades in both the informal assessment and the AS Level examinations to move on to A2. You must have been well motivated and your attendance and punctuality must also have been good.

Progression:
Successful students progress from AS to A2. Following this they may then move to higher education. You can also leave the course after the AS Level examinations and go on to another level 3 course or employment.
