Designed specifically for either the yachtsman, merchant sailor or for those that has medical responsibilities at sea. (Known as the Ships Captains Course) Complies with requirements of STCW 95. Suitable for: The course can be tailored to the client's specific requirements and type of equipment they have. If this equipment is to be purchased you may want to source it through the Kawns shop. Our training course should be attended by anyone (merchant sailor or yachtsman) who may be required to carry out emergency first aid and medical care at sea over 150 miles.

About this course

The delegate must hold an in date First Aid certificate (FAW, Medical FA or Elementary/RYA Certificate, evidence will be required on attendance on the first day of the course. Delegates must be over 21; have 18 months sea service (yacht experience at sea) and hold a valid FA qualification (i.e. within the last three years) Call us for further details.

Course programme

This course requires some previous knowledge of first aid and requires the delegate to attain a higher level of learning. The course is for those sailors who will be away from normal shore emergency services and will be required to maintain the life of someone who has fallen ill or been injured. The course consists of several in depth modules in:
  • Priorities of First Aid
  • First aid equipment
  • Duties of a First Aider
  • Record keeping
  • Actions in emergencies
  • IVI infusion
  • Basic Life Support
  • CPR
  • Advanced trauma management
  • The unconscious casualty
  • Death at sea
  • Treatment for wounds and bleeding
  • Fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries
  • Treatment for burns and scalds
  • Treatment for Shock
  • Uri analysis
  • Miscellaneous conditions
  • Injection protocols
  • Dressings and bandages
  • First aid equipment
  • Gain radio assistance
  • Use of Morphia
  • Treatments for specific illness and disease
  • Use of minor surgical procedure equipment including suturing
  • Transportation of the sick and injured
Assessment: Delegates will be continually assessed by their tutor throughout the course. At the end of the course delegates will be assessed twice in their practical skills (CPR & Injury plus ability to diagnose certain illnesses) by external assessor(s). Upon successful completion of these assessments the delegate will be awarded a MSA Proficiency in Medical Care certificate which will be valid for five years.
