Course details
This course explores the role of media in the teaching and learning of languages. Students consider and create teaching resources which exploit digital technologies. Typical areas for investigation include interactive multimedia, podcasting and vodcasting, the use of social software such as blogs and wikis, and the use of interactive electronic whiteboards.
Course structure
Students engage in preparatory reading for weekly seminars, which offer opportunities for discussion. They may also be asked to present their ideas formally to fellow students. In addition, students are expected to work independently, reading around their subject, identifying relevant areas for further enquiry, and undertaking a small-scale research study. Students are supported through individual tutorials and the university's online virtual learning environment studentcentral. There is a practical element enabling students to develop the skills needed to work with the digital tools required for materials design and production.
Areas of study
An introductory module investigates current issues in second language pedagogy. Two modules examine various aspects of applied linguistics, including the analysis of oral communication and second-language acquisition. Two further modules investigate how language learners' needs can be addressed using media technologies and purpose-made materials. Participants choose one option module. Students also attend a series of workshops, seminars and presentations, delivered across the academic year, preparing them for work on their 15,000 word dissertation.
Career and progression opportunities
Graduates typically take up positions dealing with the development and evaluation of language learning materials - for example, as project managers, materials authors or developers, self-access centre managers, or teacher trainers in the area of blended learning.
