The Edexcel level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Media consists of one core unit PLUS two specialist units and is a one year course. These include Advertising Production; Writing for the Media; Factual Production for the Media as well as the two examples below

You will learn about the media by actually carrying out practical assignments, and develop skills of organisation, planning and communication. You will progress through an introduction to media work to full production of a media product, using a range of technical skills in print, film, and technology as appropriate.

To achieve the BTEC First Certificate you will complete ONE compulsory core module and TWO specialist Modules

What and how will I be studying?

CORE MODULE: RESEARCH FOR MEDIA PRODUCTION
This will be accomplished mainly through working on the two specialist units and carrying out the appropriate research.

To achieve this you will need to:
  • Understand research methods and techniques as used in the Media industries
  • Be able to identify and gather research material
  • Be able to collate and store research material
  • Be able to present results of research
As you progress through the specialist units you will carry out tasks which will enable you to meet the critera for this.

SPECIALIST MODULE (EXAMPLE): VIDEO PRODUCTION
You will construct an original video production and you will:
  • Understand pre-production, production and post-production techniques
  • Be able to contribute to each stage of the creation of a finished video product
  • Be able to review own video production work
SPECIALIST MODULE (EXAMPLE): PRINT PRODUCTION
You will construct an original print artefact for example a magazine cover and feature article and you will:
  • Understand print production techniques and technology
  • Be able to develop ideas for printed material
  • Be able to produce print products
  • Be able to review own print production work
Successful work will involve you learning the importance of careful and detailed preparation and how important it is to have all the information about the brief, the topic and your audience, before you start to make your media product.

How is the Course assessed?
Assessment is continuous and is based on completion of set work covering research planning, pre-production and post production techniques as used in the media industries. You will achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the quality of your work. The work is assessed and moderated internally.

What skills will I need and be developing during the course?
You will work on your own and with others. You will take responsibility for some aspect of the team work at times. At other times you will be developing your own ideas and work.

You will learn lots of new skills - working with sophisticated software in print and in moving image.

You will learn the importance of being organised and meeting deadlines.

You will also be encouraged to meet professionals and perhaps work alongside them for part of the course.
