Course programme
Leading to a National Certificate in Media, this is a one year course assessed entirely through coursework. It is made up of six units that will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding as well as show you how the media industry works.
Through a series of practical projects involving film, video and photography you will learn how to plan, produce and market media products.
This is a highly varied course where creative and technical skills are sure to flourish. You will have regular access to state of the art digital cameras as well as editing, photography and lighting equipment.
WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
You will be studying six units, each carrying equal marks for the final assessment:
·Introduction to the Media
- what is the Media? How do you analyse it? How do you use research skills?
·Pre-production
- this covers the early stages of completing a media production project and includes work in video and print.
·Introduction to production
- you will make your first full production, in web design.
·Marketing and presenting a media product
- you will not only create but market and promote your own media product
·Exploring moving image products
- this provides an opportunity to make a short film or documentary
·Exploring photography and digital imaging
- you will create a portfolio of work exploring a wide range of themes including portraiture and conceptual photography. You will also be provided with the opportunity to have your work displayed as part of an exhibition.
WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
There is a heavy emphasis on production work, so class based planning sessions will be followed by practical sessions. Initially you will be given lots of training on using the hardware and software confidently and safely. You will frequently be expected to work in groups and will have opportunities to present your work to the class. There will also be times when you will be working alone on independent projects. Our strong links with the film, video production and photography industries mean that coursework is increasingly supported by practical master classes and industry visits.
HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
Assessment for this course is entirely through coursework. The OCR National Certificate is assessed at three levels: Pass, Merit or Distinction.
WHAT CAN I TAKE ALONGSIDE THE NATIONAL CERTIFICATE?
Students can take additional one year courses such as a GCSE or an AS level.
AND AFTER THE COURSE?
This course will help you to develop the skills to progress on to a range of Advanced level qualifications, including AS courses.
