Why BA(Hons) Media Culture and Practice?
Our challenging BA(Hons) Media Culture and Practice course is for students with a passion for making or writing about contemporary media. We will nurture and challenge your creativity, critical writing and technical abilities, enabling you to develop your own interests and expertise. The combination of producing media and studying will prepare you for a growing range of exciting careers across the communications industries.
Working with staff as co-researchers from the start, you will devise experimental and socially engaged projects, while building practical skills in writing and analysis, blogging, websites and social media, film, photography and events. All of which are underpinned by theoretical enquiry and critique. You will also develop an understanding of the impact of media in its cultural and historical context.

Excellent resources are available on and off campus. The course is part of UWE Bristol's Department of Arts and Cultural Industries based at Frenchay campus. You will have access to a range of technical facilities at Frenchay including bespoke computing suites equipped with industry-standard creative software, and areas for moving and still image production and editing.

About this course

Placements
Bristol has a unique approach to media production, with a rich vein of media arts, innovation and activism. You will be encouraged to engage with the local creative and cultural industries throughout the course and undertake a more formal placement in year three.
Former students have worked with Endemol on the production of Big Brother, at the BBC, the Cannes Film Festival, the Bristol Balloon Fiesta and the Arnolfini art gallery. Informal work experience is available at the Pervasive Media Studio at Watershed.

The BA (Hons) Media Culture and Practice is designed to develop your core professional skills while giving you the opportunity to explore and find your own interests and focus.

Year 1

This structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Learning and Teaching

We employ a diverse range of learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, small group discussions, screenings, practical workshops, field trips, student-led research, live briefs, blended learning (mixing classroom learning with online resources, communication and discussion) and individual tutorials.
