Who is this course for?
This course is the equivalent to three A Levels. Instead of tests, assessment is via projects and assignments. This course offers an in depth introduction to the creative skills involved in Media Production. Over the two years on this course you will work in Music Video, Drama. Documentary, Animation, Multimedia, Photo-Journalism and Writing for the Media. You will also be expected to investigate media as a business, explore the meaning of film studies and analyse historical and modern media trends.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need 4 GCSE passes at grade C or above, ideally including English. Or Merit Grades for GNVQ Media or 1st Diploma Media, or Merit Grades in Business, IT, Art & Design. The course can also be open for those who have employment experience in media or to those who have other media related experiences rather than qualifications. At interview you are expected to bring writing about a media subject, work in English, History or Media Studies. Please bring along your own set of writings, including your own stories, poetry, lyrics, journalism with some of Photography, Graphics, Web Design, Video or script ideas. You will also need Key Skill Level 2 in Communication and Key Skill Level 1 in Numeracy results or similar. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction programme where your suitability for the level and type of programme you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
BTEC National Diploma in Media. This is equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Where can it lead?
Progression leads to BA (Hons) degree or HND level qualifications. You could also go direct into employment in video production, multimedia, photography, animation, media production, media studies, journalism, advertising and broadcasting.

What will I study?
You will be expected to attend three and a half days per week. You will be expected learn through your own experiences and to develop your own creative ideas, personal observations and personal opinions into media products. There is an emphasis on the course to produce a wide range variety of media products. You will get technical instruction and support to enable you to produce your video, multi-media and photographic portfolio. You will also be expected to write analysis and debate media trends, you will be expected to write, plan and manage your own production work and media skills.

How will I be taught?
You will learn through your own experiences. You will have tutor and lecturer seminars, screenings, debates and presentations. You will work in specialist roles, learn from guidance and technical demonstrations. You will be expected to use specialist languages associated with media production and to learn through your own experience. With our advice you will develop skills through your own activity and research.

How will I be assessed?
You will be graded as Pass Merit or Distinction depending upon the quality of your work. You will cover the course by completing assignment, projects. Assignments cover course units as so your grades per assignment are related directly to your course units. The grades for your assignments and course units are calculated up at the end of the course to give you an overall course grade. At the end of the course you will be completing a final major project and an external moderator from the Awarding Body will check your grades and confirm your overall grade. You will also sit tests as a part of your Key Skills qualification.

What support is available while I am on the course?
All learners will be allocated a personal tutor in media from the start of the course to help plan and manage your learning, achievement, personal issues and finance. Subject lecturers in specialist units will guide you through course work and technical support staff will assist you in the use of technology. The College has extensive learning support services which are available to all learners including careers advice, guidance, welfare services, student finance advisers, language support and disability support.
