Media Studies

This course is designed to develop your interest in the world of media, to explore why texts are made a certain way and targeted through their mode of address. In the AS year you will complete two units. You will study a range of texts looking at representation and audience receptions through Genre and Narrative. You will study a cross section of media texts, exploring how they communicate their meanings and the Media's ever-changing role in society. For the second unit you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of a particular format through detailed study and practical work.
In the second year you will look closer at the industries behind the texts and study three different industries through the exploration of a few texts. You will also have the chance to develop your area of interest through an investigation involving research and practical production
ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Grade C in English.
ASSESSMENT:
Written exam papers, documented practical work and investigative study.
PROGRESSION:
The subject can be developed further in many HE institutions and can also be a good pathway into courses in broadcasting, journalism and jobs in the Media.
