Media Studies
The course is divided into 50% coursework and 50% examinations. You will be studying a variety of media issues and debates in various media formats. You will be taught the technical codes and conventions that are needed when constructing a film, storyboards, script writing, textual analysis, digital editing skills, new media technologies, audience theories, podcasts, web design, television and investigating the power of the media.
AS is divided into two modules:
G321 Foundation Portfolio (50%) Students will be required to extensively research into the genre of thrillers, script, storyboard, film and edit the first two minutes of a thriller, producing a Power Point presentation to display ideas that initiated their film ideas.
G322 Key Media Concepts (50%) 2 hour exam which is divided into two sections: Textual Analysis of an unseen moving image from a television drama. Media Ownership exploring Institutions and Audiences within new media technologies. A2 is divided into two modules:
G323 Advanced Portfolio 50% (25%) . You will promote a new soap opera, including filming a trailer and the first two minutes of the opening sequence. You will also be required to make a presentation via Power Point, create a website and make a DVD with extras to show your research and understanding of television scheduling.
G324 Critical Perspectives 50% (25%) 2 hour exam. This exam will cover theoretical evaluation of your coursework product and contemporary media issues and debates.
AS Marks are out of 200. 100 marks for the Foundation Portfolio and 50 marks for each essay (two in total) in the 2 hour exam.
A2 Marks are out of 200. 100 marks for Advanced Portfolio and 50 marks for each essay (two in total) in the 2 hour exam.400 marks is the maximum that can be achieved.Subjects that combine well with Media Studies are English, History, Psychology and Sociology.Further career options include journalism, filmmaking, production work, television work, camera work, script-writing, sound engineering, lighting technician, advertising agencies, sports journalism and the costume design and make-up industries.
