Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, this research-led course is ideal for careers in the medical and healthcare professions or laboratory science. It integrates scientific research and clinical skills to develop your understanding of the human body in health and disease.

You will be taught by experienced, research-active academics and clinical experts who will present the latest advances in medicine and science, and study a range of topics, including Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Inflammation and Immunobiology, Cancer Therapeutics and Nutrition Through the Lifespan. As the course progresses, you will be introduced to more advanced medical topics, and start to relate the understanding of normal healthy physiology with pathological processes.

You can choose to enhance your employability through an optional sandwich year work placement, allowing you to gain hands-on experience and develop practical and professional skills that you can apply to your learning.

Many of our graduates have pursued careers in scientific research, teaching and medical writing, and upon completion you can also choose to progress to graduate entry medicine and dentistry courses.

A minimum of 120 UCAS points from at least two A levels. One A level must be at grade C or above in either Biology, Chemistry or Human Biology, or

Teaching and assessments

This is a practical degree and provides instruction in laboratory sciences and human clinical skills such as cardiorespiratory physiology and body morphometry.

Medical Science combines quality traditional teaching such as:

You will be appointed a personal tutor for support, and will gain additional academic support from all other members of academic staff. This is a practical degree and provides instruction in laboratory sciences and human clinical skills such as:

  • Cardiorespiratory physiology (Blood Pressure, ECG and respiratory function)
  • Body morphometry (BMI)
  • First Aid

Your precise timetable will depend on your modules, however, lectures, seminars, tutorials and face-to-face contact time will normally make up approximately 17 hours of study per week. You will be expected to do approximately 20 hours of self-directed study in addition to this for the completion of assignments and for research projects.

Teaching contact hours

Contact hours in a typical week will depend to some extent on the optional modules you choose to study. However, typically you will have up to 17 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: approx. 4 hours of tutorials (or later, project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: approx. 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: approx. 7 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: approx. 20 hours studying and revising in your own time each week, including some guided study using hand-outs, online activities, etc.
