About this course

BTEC First in Applied Science (Merit) or a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including Additional Science, Applied Science or separate sciences. We also strongly recommend that you have Maths and English at grade C or Key Skills Level 2.

The Programme
A stimulating, practically based course that aims to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of all aspects of laboratory science. Students who successfully complete the course will be well equipped for a career as a science technician in the health service or similar science laboratories.
The Programme Content
The course consists of 18 units studied over two years and combines a mixture of general and specialist units to give you an excellent grounding as a Medical Science Technician. The types of unit you will cover include:
Working in the Science Industry;
Scientific Practical Techniques;
Scientific Investigation;
Physiology;
Microbiology;
Practical Chemical Analysis;
Genetics and Genetic Engineering;
Medical Physics;
Maths for Science Technicians;
Chemistry for Technicians and others.
Progression / Careers
As mentioned above, students who successfully complete the course will be well equipped for a career as a Medical Science technician in the National Health Service or medical industry science laboratories. Students who do so often carrying on studying at the same time to gain NVQs or professional body qualifications.
The course also allows you to progress onto BTEC Higher National Applied Science Diplomas or full time degrees in Applied Science. You will normally need a mixture of merits and distinctions to progress onto degree courses.
