Course programme

  • Study the thinking behind the use of simulation and the ways in which its educational use can be enhanced
  • Explore and rehearse approaches to the use of medical and clinical simulation in our state-of-the-art simulation centre, and tailor assessments inline with professional interests and needs
  • Develop the skills to independently evaluate relevant research, scholarship and practice, and deal with the complexities, contradictions and gaps in the current evidence base
  • Gain a purposeful and professional approach to the design and facilitation of simulated learning scenarios, including an awareness of personal responsibility and professional codes of conduct
  • Benefit from a systematic understanding of the wide range of learning, teaching and assessment methods that may be used in simulated settings, and learn now to selectively and effectively use these in your practice.
The course focuses on a critical approach to simulation and its uses. This is a flexible, blended learning programme designed with the needs of busy medical and healthcare professionals in mind. The course is composed of the core unit (where you also spend time in the University simulation centre) plus one second optional unit (either Workplace Based Learning or Contemporary Educational Perspectives) and is designed to help you develop a sound theoretical basis to your practice as a medical educator, both within simulation and in your wider role as a clinical educator. The PgCert in Medical Simulation is obtained by attending and passing two units:
  • The core unit (Simulation in Practice)
and either:
  • Workplace Based Learning, or
  • Educational Perspectives for the Workplace
Both these units shift from a focus on teaching to broader issues of curriculum, educational theory and how these relate to learning and teaching at work.
