About this course

Applicants should normally hold a 2(i) Honours degree in an appropriate discipline. In addition, students whose mother tongue is not English require IELTS 6.5.

Syllabus

Students choose a combination of training and thematic courses. Training options include:

  • Introduction to Historical Research
  • Research Methods in Language and Linguistics
  • Medieval Texts and Manuscripts
  • Palaeography (Vernacular and Latin)
  • Latin (Basic and Intermediate)
  • Modern Languages
  • Dissertation Preparation: Sources and Source Criticism

Thematic courses vary for each programme.

Assessment

Students must acquire 180 credits over the course of the year (120 for courses + 60 for dissertation). Assessment is based on written work and moderated according to university standards. Every student is assigned a dissertation supervisor based on their research interests.
