About this course

At the end of year two or three, you have the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the class with a one-year paid work placement in industry. An engineering placement offers a wealth of work, course, skill, personal and employability related benefits.
This must include at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications to include mathematics and at least one other science subject. For example:ABB at A Level including relevant subjects.DDM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a relevant subject.A combination of qualifications which must include relevant subjects and may include AS levels and EPQ

Course programme
You consider the uses of materials in industry, and how they are developed and processed. You'll think about design, development and realisation of new products - tackling contemporary engineering challenges. You undertake placements and practical projects as well as theoretical modules, attaining a well-rounded knowledge that is both personally useful and attractive to employers.

On placement students are supported by the Placements and Employability Team and are allocated a Visiting Tutor who will normally visit the student at their place of work.Our dedicated placement team supports you through the process and has contacts with over 2,000 national and international placement providers. Students typically earn between £12,000 and £16,000 a year. Our links and partnerships include major organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Tata Steel, Network Rail, Siemens, BAE Systems, AMEC and Morgan Advanced Materials.
Live projects
Alongside their teaching, our lecturers conduct research and consultancy for industry, in our Materials and Engineering Research Institute, one of the best in the UK for engineering research. This keeps your lectures and seminars up to date, giving you the latest knowledge in your subject.
Networking opportunities
There are opportunities to get involved with a number of student engineering societies, including our Materials Society. We also encourage you to become a member of a professional body, such as the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (IOM3). The IOM3 can help with career planning, building of engineering knowledge, and have a wealth of resources including scholarships and awards.
