There’s no doubt that our course will strengthen your employment opportunities in health and social care. Having been taught to think both critically and analytically, you’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge needed for your future career in relevant industries, including public and private health and social care services.

You’ll develop skills that employers value together with a strong understanding of mental health issues, enhancing your employability and preparing you for middle or senior-ranking posts, in the UK and internationally.

A First Degree, with Honours, in a related subject and at a minimum final classification of Lower Second (2:2) or equivalent. Holders of other awards, including those from non-UK universities will be considered on the equivalence of their qualifications.
If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 ( Academic level) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

Modules & assessment

  • Specialist Mental Health CareThis module aims to allow you to develop specialist knowledge on certain mental health conditions. You will be able to understand and comprehend various specialised aspects of the ‘craft of caring’ for people with a serious mental illness. You will also get the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of more complex individualised care, helping to improve the quality of care the patient receives. The module will explore varied specialisms for example, forensics, older people, learning disabilities, carers, child and adolescence mental health care needs, and will also consider an international perspective.
  • Research ProposalThis module will provide you with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health and social care, professional practice and regulation and policy. It will provide you with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas that underlie the process of enquiry and its relationship to practice. The module will provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen for your research project.
  • Collaborative Mental Health CareThe Major Project is central to the Masters award and enables you to demonstrate your ability to synthesise learning from previous modules. You will use this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work-based project. This is the opportunity for you to demonstrate the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to your chosen topic and a critical understanding of research methods and their relationship to knowledge. You will also be in a position to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in your research or professional practice and to expand existing knowledge to contribute to the development of best practice
  • Contemporary Issues in Mental Health CareThe module will address a number of issues related to mental health and society. You’ll explore the way in which mental illness is portrayed through the media and the impact this can have on interpretations of mental health and mental illness within a given society. This will include examining how mental health is represented in the news, on social media and within fictional sources including films and literature. The delivery of culturally appropriate health care will also be examined and you’ll reflect on how the knowledge gained can be applied to current or future practice.
  • Major ProjectThe Major Project is central to the Masters award and enables you to demonstrate your ability to synthesise learning from previous modules. You will use this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work-based project. This is the opportunity for you to demonstrate the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to your chosen topic and a critical understanding of research methods and their relationship to knowledge. You’ll be assessed in a number of ways, from writing magazine articles and essays to delivering a presentation and a portfolio.

Course duration: 1 year (full-time); 2 years (part-time) This course is blended learning which means it is taught both on campus and via distance learning. Part-time teaching times: Trimester 1: Monday & Tuesday 9am-4pm; Trimester 2: Wednesday & Thursday 9am-4pm; Trimester 3: Tuesday & Wednesday 9am-4pm
