Mental Health Nursing is a value based and very rewarding profession. This course offers you the opportunity to develop caring, compassionate and professional relationships with service users and their carers while using appropriate knowledge and evidence from a range of sources.
This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and competence to understand the experiences of people with mental health problems and to assist and facilitate their journey to recovery. The course builds on knowledge of mental health, various disorders and innovative nursing care approaches. It allows development of your skills in practice settings working with real professionals in real settings with real service users under supervision with a good level of support.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- a course that currently meets the professional outcomes identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), as essential prerequisites for registration as a Mental Health Nurse in the UK;
- academic theory and practical experience with our NHS Trust partners in Coventry and Warwickshire;
- potential employment opportunities in a range of settings, including diverse community teams, inpatient units, prisons and specialist services across the lifespan for successful graduates;

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditor's standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?You will learn that people with mental health issues come from a cross section of society and you will be encouraged to challenge stereotypes. You will develop professional skills in providing care and compassion to be applied in a range of situations where individuals may be experiencing distress.
You will learn about legal and ethical issues which will be specifically applied to mental health nursing.
You will become immersed in learning about the needs of populations, individuals, public health and related policy over the three year course with an emphasis on using research to enhance and improve services.
You will study therapeutic interventions and how to apply related theories and skills. You will learn how to use information gathered during comprehensive assessments in order to develop complex packages of care for people and their families.
To reflect the changes in the health professions, this course could be subject to change as developments are notified to the University.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Your course team places a high value on interactive teaching and learning methods which includes interactive lectures, associated seminars, participative workshops and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor provides support from day one, assists with the transition into Higher Education and will review your progress throughout the full three year course.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 10%; coursework, (tests, essays and other activities) 60%; other e.g. placements etc. 30%.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSWhile 50% of the course is in practice - requiring 40 hours per week – a typical teaching week is expected to have up to 21 contact hours of study and this will break down as follows:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 5 hours
Medium group teaching: 6 hours of workshops or seminars each week
Large group teaching: 10 hours of lectures each week
Personal study: 14 hours personal studying and revising
