Mentoring Skills

OCN Level 2

Course Description
Mentoring: a form of support, help, guidance or role model.

The course is aimed at providing students with a basic understanding of mentoring skills, theoretical underpinning and an opportunity for practice and personal development.

We will focus on key theoretical models which can be applied to a mentoring context and the skills needed to become an effective helper.

We will look at areas such as creating a positive relationship, building rapport, non-verbal communication, listening, motivation, self esteem and much more.

The main principles will be
  • the development of a mentoring tool kit
  • lots of practical learning in class
  • the opportunity to share good practice, experiences and network

There will also be an opportunity to develop links with external agencies for possible voluntary placement*

The course currently has Working Towards status for Approved Provider Standard (APS) which is a recognised quality award.

Assessment
There will be three key pieces of assessment
  • A reflective case study on a mentoring relationship & skills used
  • Completion of a mentoring booklet & portfolio
  • Practical role play & peer evaluation

*subject to individual organisations policy/approval & CRB check.
