Midwifery (Short) BSc Honours

Key modules will provide the necessary theory to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency for midwifery, which include: anatomy and physiology/pathophysiology; cultural and psychosocial issues; interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues.

Upon graduation, you will be able to confidently assess, plan, implement and evaluate effective midwifery care. Your learning will be integrated with other students from our School of Health and Education and designated study days will be organised for shared learning with midwifery, medical and social work students.

Modules

There are four 30 credit theory modules:

• Fundamentals of Midwifery
• Evidence Based Midwifery Practice
• Care of Mother and Baby with Complex Needs
• Towards Autonomous Midwifery Practice

These modules aim to ensure that you move towards the role of autonomous midwife practitioners, competent to deal with a variety of normal and/ or challenging situations in midwifery practice. You will learn the midwives' roles, responsibilities and spheres of practice when providing care to healthy women and their babies during pregnancy, labour and postnatally, and integrate theory with practice building on existing knowledge and skills. The emphasis will be on maintaining normality.

Midwives are the key professionals providing maternity care for mothers and babies. It is vital that midwives have the appropriate knowledge and skills to recognise, assess and communicate risk and be proficient and confident in supporting women, babies and their families in all aspects of childbirth. You will explore wider perspectives in midwifery including ethics in healthcare, the public health role of the midwife and develop management skills.

Practice Modules (30 credits each)

There are three practice modules which run in tandem with theoretical modules. These enable you to link practice to theory and learning, through structured and facilitated processes of written and verbal reflection. They draw on your previous experiences as nurses to facilitate the transition from nurse to midwife.

Dissertation (30 credits)

This synthesises academic learning providing an opportunity to study independently and investigate a topic in depth. It fosters academic curiosity, an inquiry based approach, the employment and application of research skills. You select a topic of personal interest for further study and manage your own learning, with the support of a supervisor.
