Minute Taking

Introduction: The design of this Minute Taking course reflects that minute takers can do more than provide a concise record of the meetings they attend. It provides delegates with practical guidance on the wider process of administering effective meetings, as well as providing the opportunity to develop skills and confidence in taking accurate and concise minutes. Delegates will consider the full cycle of events leading up to meetings and how best to prepare for them. The skills of listening, note taking and minute writing will be practised.

Course Objectives:

  • The purpose and types of meetings
  • Roles before, during and after meetings
  • Developing a working relationship with the Chair
  • The role and construction of the agenda
  • Benefits of good minute taking
  • The meeting cycle
  • Active listening skills
  • Taking minutes - purpose, key points, style, grammar
  • Creating a table of actions
  • Editing and proofreading for maximum effect

Delivery Methods: The course will be delivered through a variety of participative training methods designed to meet the objectives. This provides delegates with skill development whilst maintaining their interest and motivation. Methods include group discussion and tutor input, practical exercises and mini-case studies conducted individually, in pairs and in groups where appropriate. The course concludes with delegates completing an Action Plan detailing how they will apply their learning on return to the workplace and to whom they can turn for further coaching and support.

Courseware: The learning is reinforced by handouts covering all the main objectives and exercises during the day. These handouts provide a valuable aide-memoire to support learning on return to the workplace.

Course Includes: Lunch/refreshments and course materials.
