Course programme

If you want to expand your knowledge of contemporary painting, materials, deconstructing collage and abstract painting then this course is for you. This course is for students who have some experience with painting but who want to explore their ideas further; you may feel stuck in a traditional way of working, or limited by your method, style and knowledge of materials. You will gain the confidence and experience to move forward and understand the exciting potential of Mixed Media painting processes, techniques and materials.

You will explore a range of new techniques and materials, experimenting with colour, dripping, pouring, glazing, collage, surface texture, photo transfer, resin and more; creating contemporary artworks which are built up through layers.

Topics covered

• Surface preparation, painting supports, priming and canvases
• Generating painting ideas through collage and photo transfer montage
• Understanding layering processes with acrylics paints and media
• Demonstrations and practical sessions on the chromatic value of colour through opacity, transparency and surface
• Stencil processes with adhesive sheeting, masking tape and latex in order to create forms and hard edged shapes
• Demonstrations and experimenting with oil paint, varnishes, glazing and high gloss resin
• Mixing your own pigments, pouring mediums, incompatible paint processes and techniques
• Wax varnishes, mediums and hot wax encaustic painting

Course structure
The morning sessions will consist of technical material demonstrations, along with some visual presentations of contemporary artist work and concepts, during the rest of the day you will work on your projects experimenting with the materials. The tutor will give ongoing guidance on compositional ideas, colour and paint processes.

Structured projects will be set exploring various approaches to painting, helping you work within a framework while giving you the freedom to generate your own ideas.

You will gain a wider knowledge of Mixed Media Painting materials and a greater understanding of the language of contemporary painting.

We will explore collage, composition, photo transfer, acrylic paints & mediums, exploring painting processes through space, colour, light, texture, glazing and delivery systems of paint, wax and resins. There will also be PowerPoint presentations on contemporary artist practice and concepts, which will help inform your initial ideas.

Who should take this course?
This course is for students, with some experience of painting, at all levels will be particularly beneficial if you want to develop a body of work for your portfolio or apply for a higher level of study.

It is suitable for students who wish to build on their personal practice in order to gain a greater understanding of materials, develop their mixed media techniques and expand their knowledge of contemporary art practice.

Students on Fine Art BA/MA courses have attended this course.
