What will I study?
In the AS units you cover a range of topics under the following headings: Youth Culture and Concerns, Lifestyle, Health and Fitness, Travel and Tourism, Environmental Issues, Education and Employment. The second year (A2) builds on the foundations laid at AS level and the topics are extended to include Customs, Traditions, Beliefs and Religions, National and International Events, Literature and the Arts.

Duration:
One year for AS and a further year to complete the A Level in one of the following languages: French, German or Spanish.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
In order to succeed in these courses you will need commitment and determination together with a willingness to participate actively in conversation. Language learning requires an appetite for learning new words and an enthusiasm for investigating the way languages are structured. {new paragraph here} Modern Languages courses involve a significant commitment to weekly homework. The study programme is supplemented with weekly oral classes in small groups with a native speaker. You will also study independently in the Languages Self Access Centre, which is fully equipped with books, magazines, Satellite TV and computer assisted learning resources. {new paragraph here} A fast track option (taking AS and A2 in one year) is available for native or semi-native speakers subject to a diagnostic test.

How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be given weekly homework. At the end of the course, AS and A2 are each assessed by means of a single written examination plus an oral examination.

What can I do afterwards?
Languages are in great demand in the modern workplace and having a language at AS or A level will certainly improve your prospects of employment. A language qualification provides an opportunity to progress to Language courses in Higher Education, as single or joint Honours Degrees. In addition, there are many exciting opportunities to live and work abroad if you can communicate fluently in other languages.

Are there any additional costs involved?
Students are expected to buy a good bilingual dictionary, a grammar book and a textbook. AS textbooks are for French: Elan 1 second edition, for German: Zeitgeist 1 second edition, for Spanish: Animo 1 second edition. In addition, students may be required to buy a literary text for A2.
