What are the Course Details?
This is a full-time course aimed at those who would like to work in the motor vehicle industry.
As part of this course you will learn some of the operating principles of motor vehicles. Learners will also be able to work towards an NVQ 1 in Valeting Vehicles, which can be integrated with the Vehicle Fitting unit.

What will I Learn?
As part of the course the following units will be covered:
  • Working Safely and Effectively
  • Foundation Skills
  • Vehicle Construction and Routine Maintenance
  • Operating Principles of Tyres, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Operating Principles of Engines
  • Operating Principles and Maintenance of Transmission Systems
  • Operating Principles of Electrical and Electronic Systems

These activities will be based in the College's well-equipped vehicle workshop


How will I Learn?
Learners will study at College in both classrooms and the workshop environment (theory and practical). Work placements may be available.

How will I be Assessed?
Learners' performance will be measured using the following methods: continual assessment, practical skills assessment and computer based multi-choice examinations throughout the course.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. Learners will also be able to access Functional Skills in Communication, Application of Number and IT, at a level appropriate to their individual abilities.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a part of this course although learners will spend significant time in the College workshops.

What can I Progress to?
Learners who successfully achieve the Level 1 will have the opportunity to progress onto the IMI Technical Certificate, or to apply for an apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Mechanics.

Other Learner's Experiences;
Previous learners have successfully gained employment within the industry and progressed onto higher level qualifications.
