About this course
Prior to attending the training course, you must have registered with Mountain Leader Training NI (contact details at end of section), and have completed 20 ‘quality days’.

Skills Covered
Skills covered will include areas of the Mountain Leader Award syllabus, including: personal skills, group leadership and management, dealing with incidents, movement on steep ground, emergency ropework skills, the role of the Mountain Leader, mountain weather structure of mountain leader training etc.
Outline Programme (for 6 day course)
Day 1
Arrive at Tollymore and outline for the programme from staff.
Morning: The Mountain Leader Award – role, remit.
Afternoon: Hill session, navigation
Evening Session: Group Leadership and Management
Day 2
Full day on the hill, looking at navigation, route planning and route choice,
Evening Session: Night Navigation
Day 3
Full Hill day, movement of steep ground, emergency ropework, group leadership and management in practice
Evening Session: Mountain Weather
Days 4, 5 Expedition, covering aspects of the syllabus. Return to Centre at 5.00 p.m.
Day 6 River crossings, searches.
3.30 p.m. – Debrief and reviews.
The ‘3 weekend’ version of the course covers all aspects of the training outlined above, over three distinct weekends. Attendance at all weekends is mandatory.
It is important to note that the above outline programme is a guide. Times may vary due to weather conditions or other reasons.
Our Staff
The instructor(s) who will work with you are all highly experienced and qualified. Tollymore prides itself in the knowledge and experience that its full time and part time staff bring to its courses. Our staff are all keen hillwalkers and mountaineers and know the Mournes and further afield very well. You may well have met them in the hills in the past or will bump into them in the future on days when they are not working! All are obliged to attend annual staff updates and training courses
What do I need to bring?
The following list is a suggestion of what you should bring. You should bring your own personal hillwalking kit. You can, if necessary, borrow equipment from our extensive stores. The following list is a suggestion of what you should bring.

Accommodation
Accommodation is included in your course fee. Accommodation is in comfortable dormitories, and you will have full use of all Tollymore Mountain Centre facilities, including drying room, lounge and access to a wide range of instructional and inspirational videos and books for any spare time. Tollymore has a number of comfortable meeting rooms, where the instructors will meet the group prior to the start of the course each day. We will also meet here over a cup of tea or coffee for reviewing the course on Sunday afternoon.
Catering
Your course is fully catered, so all you will need to bring some additional snack food.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Prior to attending a Mountain Leader Training Course, it is necessary to register with on eof the 4 home nation training boards. A registration form is available from the Mountain Leader Training UK website.
Please note that it is possible to complete ML training by either attending a single 6 day long course, or attending a block of three weekend courses. Attendance on the weekend courses (Feb, March and April or Oct, Nov and Dec) are non transferable i.e. you must attend all three weekends in the series. If you are unable to attend one of the weekends, you may be able to attend a subsequent course, subject to space being available on the course and subject to payment of a course fee (£160)
