The MRes Biology has been designed for recent Biology graduates who wish to pursue a research career in industry or academia, as well as those who are already working within research. The programme encourages applications from high quality and motivated biology graduates who have a keen interest in developing their knowledge, expertise and research skills.

The combination of taught modules on research practice and the development of a high impact research project will equip you with an essential foundation for a successful career in academic and/or industrial research within your chosen field. The course also provides ideal preparation to progress your research to PhD level.

About this course

The MRes Biology has a focus on honing field and laboratory skills, developing highly sought-after research and applied skills to an advanced level, and enhancing a range of transferable skills to enhance your employability and provide opportunities for career advancement. The aim of the programme is to produce high quality scientists equipped for a career in academic or industrial research.

The skills and experience acquired through an MRes programme also provide essential preparation for progressing to higher research qualifications, such as MPhil and PhD.

You would normally have, as a minimum, a 2:1 honours degree in a biological discipline. However, if you have a 2:2 honours degree in a biological discipline and subsequent experience working within a research environment, you may still be considered and we encourage you to apply.

SCI4000 Research Planning and Design (40 credits)

SCI4001 Research Outreach and Impact (20 credits)

SCI4002 Research Thesis (120 credits)


What will I study?

During the programme you will benefit from taught modules which cover experimental design and development of a research project, advanced data analysis, research ethics, risk assessment and submitting a research funding application.

You will also gain experience in knowledge transfer to enhance your understanding of how to maximise the impact of your research in the wider society outside an academic audience. You will be able to develop your own research project on a relevant topic of your choice in collaboration with supervisors within the Biology Department.

The culmination of the programme will be the production of a research thesis in the form of a journal paper at publication standard.

£12,250 for international students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2016/17.


How will I be assessed?

Taught components of the programme are assessed through coursework which is tailored to suit the subject area of each module and may include practical portfolios, specimen collections, project reports, field notebooks and oral presentations. Your thesis will also be assessed by an external examiner who will be an expert in your chosen field of study.
