Course Overview

The MA Museum Studies course is Museums Association and CHNTO accredited.

Critical learning for museum professionals.

This pioneering course offers up-to-the-minute approaches to creative museum practice. Intensive study units incorporate the very best teaching methodologies with collections handling, visiting speakers and our own professoriate contributing to a dynamic inspiring course. The course is team taught by academics and leading museum and heritage professionals. Our yearly intake is limited.

The course is supported by copious collections study with extensive behind the scenes access to displays, collections and museum staff in the leading SE Hub Museum Service, Hampshire County Museums. National, regional, local and independent museums are also visited and studied in an intensive and exciting way. The course also features a unique focus on contemporary collecting of the intangible cultural heritage. Key thinkers in the world of museums and cultural heritage management contribute to the course including Professor Stuart Davies, creator of ‘Renaissance in the regions’ and Peter Howard, editor of the International Journal of Heritage Studies. Museum Studies Programme Leader, Yvette Staelens, was formerly Deputy Director of the Area Museum Council for the South West and has a portfolio of over 20 years museum professional experience. The course also taps into the range of expertise from the Centre for Archaeology, Anthropology & Heritage.

The course consists of six units delivered as intensive taught modules. These are supported by assignments, a ‘live’ exhibition project, a dissertation and a placement.

The Student experience

Placements
Fieldwork and practice is a vital component of the course and the 25-day supervised placement provides crucial industry experience and contacts required to further a museum career. Students are supported in finding a suitable institution and overseas placements are possible.

Museum Visits
Visits to museums and galleries are an important feature of the learning programme and commence with a total immersion unit at the course outset. National museums, large and small independents, and local and regional museums are included, alongside designated collections.
