Course programme

The course aims to:
provide the opportunity for both single and interdisciplinary study of music, theatre and film as cultural process, artistic discourse and performance event through intellectual and creative investigation;
encourage a rich cross-fertilisation of ideas, concepts and practices between the disciplines of music and drama;
stimulate and support the student's individual development as scholar and practitioner within both music and drama, with particular reference to abilities of independent evaluation and research, critical analysis, technical and artistic skills, and effective written and oral communication;
encourage the analysis and use of technology as applicable to the study of music, theatre and film as creative practices;
equip students with a range of transferable skills, appropriate to later postgraduate academic and vocational study, and also engagement in the workplace in a wide range of careers in the disciplines of music, drama and related fields.
The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama
was opened in 2003, following a £6 million investment from the university. As a result students can now take advantage of state-of-the-art equipment and resources, including the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, The John Thaw Studio Theatre, the Lenagan Library and the John Casken Lecture Theatre, as well as specialist rehearsal and practice spaces. In addition, £2.2 million was invested in new electroacoustic composition studios, which opened in 2007 and are the home of the NOVARS Research Centre
.
You attend lectures and small group seminars for some programmes, while others are taught entirely through seminar groups with workshops. You are also encouraged to study independently. You receive private tuition for instrumental or vocal lessons if they count as credit towards your degree. You have ample opportunity to test run your pieces in informal lunchtime concerts.
Coursework is regularly assigned and assessed either continually or at the end of the semester, depending on the course units taken. Students have opportunities to take classes in which presentations or performances may count as an assessed element. Many of our students choose to present a formal music recital for assessment on their instrument. Methods of assessment are clearly published six months before the course unit begins.

Careers
Careers and employability

A Music degree from Manchester provides excellent training for a host of careers, both within and outside of the music industry; it doesn't limit you - employers will recognise that you are dedicated, creative, versatile, excellent team p
layers, highly organized, can work independently and have exceptional powers of concentration.

I had fantastic violin teachers throughout my time there, which made an enormous difference and I benefited hugely from the opportunities to take part in and to watch regular performances
. - Gemma Bass, violinist, Manchester Camerata (MusB, 2007)

For me the most formative aspect of my time in Manchester was the interaction with my fellow musicians in conducting the orchestras and new music ensemble - it taught me a great deal about the art of both conducting and composing, and in fact about music in general
. Duncan Ward, freelance composer and conductor (Joint Course, 2010)

I had A LOT of performance opportunities, which was a big bonus. Perhaps most importantly, the department provided me with a safe, supportive environment where I felt I had the space to spread my musical wings and really work out where I was heading musically
. Marcus Farnsworth, Singer; winner of the 2011 Ferrier Competition (MusB, 2005)
