About this course
The course aims to enable understudies to: developed an awareness of the stylistic range and the formal principles of Western music during the period from around 1000AD to the present day
developed an awareness of contexts surrounding the composition and performance of music during this period
developed a secure understanding of the chronology and geography of music during this period
developed an awareness of key concepts and issues in current musicology
developed listening skills and aural aptitude
developed skills of individual research
developed written and presentational skills in relation to the history of music
developed oral skills in relation to the history of music
A degree from the School of Music offers excellent employment prospects, in a wide range of career options. Many of our graduates choose to become teachers, at all educational levels (up to and including university); others take up administrative posts with orchestras, opera houses, or arts centres. Music graduates are always needed in the media and in recording companies, as technicians, producers, programme planners, and writers. Other possible career paths include specialist music journalism, music publishing, music librarianship, and arts marketing. Several of our graduates have gone on to become distinguished academics, composers, and performers.
Typically 300 280 points at A2 level (with a B in Music at A2 level); Merit in ABRSM Grade 7 Theory (or higher) will be accepted in lieu of A2 level; Music Technology or Music Practical A2 level will not be accepted in lieu of Music A2 level; candidates following two A2 levels will be considered on individual merit
