You will have the opportunity to perform, compose and develop your musical understanding. The course is for you if you have strong performance skills and an interest in composition and the analysis of a wide range of music. For this specification, learners must choose either Option A in both Components 1 and 2 or Option B in both Components 1 and 2. All learners must study Component 3

About this course

Grade 5 or above in GCSE Music
ABRSM Grade 5 or equivalent on an instrument and theory

Course programme

COMPONENT 1: PERFORMING

Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by a visiting examiner.

Option A: 10-12 minutes: 35% of qualification.
Minimum of 3 pieces from 2 areas of study with one as soloist and or, ensemble.

Option B: 6-8 minutes: 25% of qualification.
Minimum of two pieces either as soloist, ensemble or combination. One piece must reflect the musical characteristics of one area of study.

COMPONENT 2: COMPOSING

Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by WJEC.

Option A: 4-6 minutes: 25% of qualification
Two compositions, one which reflects the Western Classical Tradition in response to a set brief. The second composition is a free composition.

Option B: 8-10 minutes: 35% of qualification
Three compositions, one which reflects the Western Classical Tradition in response to a set brief. The second composition must reflect one different area of study (i.e. not the Western Classical Tradition) while the third composition is a free composition

COMPONENT 3: APPRAISAL

Written examination: 2 hours 15 minutes: 40% of qualification

  • Area of study A: Western Classical Tradition (The Development of the Symphony)
  • Area of study D: Jazz
  • Area of study E: Into the Twentieth Century

Additional information

You can take part in a broad and engaging extra-curricular programme and frequent performance opportunities including Funk Band, small band sessions and workshops. This programme is open to everyone whether you are studying Music or not. The Music Department is equipped with Apple Mac computers, the latest versions of Logic Pro and Sibelius software. It also houses practice rooms and a professional standard recording studio. Each computer is equipped to record audio and has Native instrument samples. The Music Department can help students in finding instrumental tutors and provides tutors at the College on request.
