You will prepare a short recital on your instrument to minimum Grade 5 standard. You will compile a composition folder of harmony exercises and an original composition for a group of instruments. You will develop your aural skills and learn analysis techniques through studying classical music and jazz. You should be learning an instrument and be able to read treble clef. Music AS Level
If you are interested in Classical & Jazz music then this course is for you. You will develop your understanding of musical genres, theories and compositions along with your practical skills.

What does the course involve?
You will prepare a short recital on your instrument to minimum Grade 5 standard. You will compile a composition folder of harmony exercises and an original composition for a group of instruments. You will develop your aural skills and learn analysis techniques through studying classical music and jazz. You should be learning an instrument and be able to read treble clef. You must be interested in classical music. Piano skills are also useful. If you do not have any we will offer you some free lessons to give you some basic skills.

Additional Costs
There are additional costs towards extra instrumental lessons. We try to arrange free lessons for students who request it at the College. Otherwise, students having lessons outside the College pay for them themselves. No instruments are supplied.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it crucial to be able to play at grade 5 standard and above?
Yes, this is the standard set by the exam board, although in exceptional circumstances the lecturer may waive this.

Will there be performance opportunities?
There are usually concerts in the Sundial Theatre. A choir is being offered as an enrichment activity.

Will I get support in developing my music skills?
Yes, the College offers free tuition in your specialist instrument. Lessons are arranged on arrival at the College.
