Course programme
The ACM Diploma is mapped against the Edexcel BTEC National Certificate in Music.
Students graduating from this programme will be awarded two qualifications:
- The ACM Diploma in Contemporary Popular Music and
- The Edexcel BTEC National Certificate in Music.
This qualification is run at Level 3 and sits alongside ‘A’ Levels and other NVQ Level 3 awards.
- The ACM Diploma is a practical, industry related course concentrating on the skills required to start a realistic career in the music business.
- Taught by music industry specialists and professional musicians, the Diploma gives students one of the most rounded and intensive practical programmes currently available.
- Students have regular access to ACM's state of the art facilities including the recording studio complex, rehearsal facilities and the learning resource centre.
- The course consists of twelve modules and students learn by completing assignments based upon real world situations; these are broken down into four core units and eight specialist units.
- Students will be expected to work on a variety of music-based projects, form bands, rehearse extensively and organise gigs.
- The Diploma lasts for one year and consists of sixteen hours of lectures per week, taught over thirty-nine weeks. For every hour spent in the classroom, students are expected to spend at least one hour out of class practising and rehearsing.
- The core units give students a cohesive and professional understanding of the music industry from performance to contract.
- The specialist units enable students to study particular areas in depth, honing their skills and enhancing their career opportunities.
Core Modules
- Music Industry Studies - This series of lectures examines various professional areas of the music industry including study of marketing tools, contractual issues and career opportunities.
- Band Skills - This unit equips students for professional performance situations through practical rehearsal in a professional environment, with development feedback and encouragement from industry based tutors.
- Music Culture - Through analysis of different social, cultural, historical, and economic and political musical influences, students develop the ability to understand, discuss and analyse different musical genres through the decades.
- Professional Showcase - An extension of the Band Skills module. This unit prepares students for a final live performance in a professional environment.
Special Units
- Song Writing - This unit allows students to develop their composition skills through the practical study of various industry techniques and stylistics.
- Stylistic Awareness - Primarily a listening unit, these lectures study the various musical components of a wide range of styles allowing students to develop the ability to recreate and re-interpret.
- Ear Training - Students are encouraged to develop their sense of aural perception through practical and theoretical exercises.
- Performance Clinic - This is achieved through the development of formalised practise routines, allowing students to develop the necessary practical skills required to become a working musician.
- Improvisation Workshop - Building on the ideas identified in Performance Clinic, students now develop a more advanced application of these skills.
- Repertoire Development- This unit provides students with the opportunity to learn a variety of repertoire in a same discipline environment. Different arrangements and techniques will be discussed in order to prepare for band rehearsal and performance in Band Skills.
- Stage Presentation- Continuing on from Repertoire Development, students develop more accurate and artistic performance techniques, while expanding on their performance repertoire.
- Music Theory - Through practical and theoretical study techniques, students begin to acquire a basic understanding of music theory and its applications.
