The programme focuses on popular music performance, band rehearsal, songwriting and live sound, but also covers areas such as composition, studio recording, the integration of technology, and relevant aspects of research, the music business and arts management.

Course programme

Applicants should normally be at least 18 years of age. We are looking for creative, self-motivated, passionate music lovers who are committed to studying and developing their skills to a high level. Applications are welcomed from candidates with a subject-specific Level 3 course such as a National Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma, A Level, Access to Higher Education Course and including mature students who hold relevant work experience and/or qualifications and/or learning through experience. Applicants will normally be invited for interview and audition. Course Content To achieve the HND Diploma in Music you will need to complete a minimum of 240 credits of which 70 credits are mandatory core (16 units). The mandatory core units covered for the HND are: • Creative Arts Research Skills • Music in Context • Critical Music Listening • Preparation, Process and Production in the Creative Arts Other indicative units: • Aural Perception • Band Rehearsal and Performance • Music Notation • Music Performance Studies • Music Technology • Live Sound for Small Venues • Improvisation in Music • Music Composition Techniques • Music Performance Skills • Songwriting Techniques and Skills • Music Studio Production • The Music Business in the 21st Century The course is predominantly assessed through the completion of large projects that you will undertake both individually and in groups. Much of the study will require work outside of formal classes, so self-motivation and good time management skills are essential. As a guideline you are advised that a 15-credit unit approximates to a learning time of 150 hours. How will I be assessed? Assessment for this programme will be through a mix of coursework and examinations. Progression The purpose of the course is to prepare you for entry into various music-related careers. You will leave with a range of skills that will be much in demand in the workplace. This course can lead to direct progression to the second or third year of an Honours Degree at a university. Fees The course fees for all students for this course will be £5250 per annum for 2016/17.
